Updated, But Not Outdated
Originally written in 1996 and then revised and updated twenty years later in 2016, Eat Right 4 Your Type has certainly stood the test of time. I originally read the book in the early 2000’s and recently had my interests renewed while at a health expo. I had already been wondering if the research touted within the text had stood the test of time. As such, when faced with a practitioner that heavily practiced the methods contained within the book (including darkfield microscopy), I had some pretty direct questions for them. What I quickly learned was that the book had been “recently” revised, but not in a manner that modified the old message, rather in a manner that expanded on the previous volume with new foods and documented approaches. Further, I learned that there was now an official app that made it really easy to reference the foods most appropriate for your blood type.
Key Insights
- Lectins and Blood Type: All foods contain lectins, many of which can negatively interact with different blood types, causing inflammation and/or immune reactions. Avoiding these “wrong” foods is a key part of the strategy.
- Food as Medicine: D’Adamo emphasizes that following the correct diet can help prevent disease, improve digestion, reduce stress, and boost energy based on your blood type’s evolutionary history.
- Each Blood Type Has Specific Dietary Guidelines: For example, Type Os may thrive in a high-protein, meat-heavy diet (similar to Paleo), while Type As thrive with plant-based, vegetarian diets.
- Blood Type Impacts Exercise Needs Too: For example, Type Os appear to benefit from intense physical activity contrary to Type As who benefit from calming exercises such as yoga and tai chi
- Customization is Key: D’Adamo stresses that no single diet fits everyone — personalization, even beyond blood type, is important for long-term health.
Ever Heard of Gluten
Gluten is just one example of a lectin located within foods. Of course, the widespread messages surrounding the negative effects of gluten are abundant to say the least, however they rarely explain what gluten actually is nor why it should be avoided other than symptomatic relief. Of course, some people are more “tolerant” of gluten – but just because you are “tolerant” doesn't mean that the consumption of gluten is not affecting your optimal health and performance. Further, there are those with Celiac Disease in which the tolerance of gluten is virtually zero, and the consumption of any gluten containing products leads to severe digestive distress.
Similar to gluten, many other lectins obtained from foods cause agglutination, a sort of clumping of cells, which can drastically affect circulation and a cascade of other related effects. Although the physiological impact of other lectins may not be as severe (although possibly more severe on an individual basis in some instances), they are still contributing to less than optimal cellular environments and possibly contributing to latent health issues that will later need to be addressed.
