Skill With People - Book Front Cover

Skill With People

Les Giblin

Overview

This book was recommended to me by a friend in the insurance industry, touting it as their “go to” resource when training new hires as well as as a personal reminder of the things they should practice themselves.  This book is a quick read, a mere 43 pages, but don’t use that to place value on the content.

Unlike many other popular books centered around developing interpersonal skills, this one skips the storytelling and gets right to the point.  Personally, I see this book as more of a manual or “user guide” for interacting with humans.  The book is grounded in principles of human psychology and one might conclude that the author was educated in the field.  To the contrary, the author was a world class salesperson who compiled the secrets to his success 22 years after beginning his career.

No research cited, no studies to back his claims, no letters before or after his name (Dr, PHD, MS), just the skills he used and learned to have a successful career (and assumably… life).

Key Insights

  • It's like being told to put common sense into practice.
  • The book’s value is not in volume, but rather density.
  • Filled with practical suggestions that the reader can quickly put into practice.
  • The author shares their wisdom and not their ego.

A few of my favorite quotes from the book!

Understanding people and human nature simply involves recognizing people for what they are; not what you think they are, nor what you want them to be.
