Challenging The Status Quo
In “The Biology Of Belief”, Bruce Lipton, PHD challenges the classic Newtownian model of biology along with its classically held belief that the nucleus acts as the “brain” of the cell. Lipton, who taught anatomy for about a decade at the University of Wisconsin School of Medicine, argues that the cell membrane acts more like the “brain” and nervous system of the cell as it communicates with its environment, controlling cellular function.
The book which was originally published in 2005 was certainly ahead of its time. Despite compelling arguments and supportive research cited throughout, his views have not been widely adopted by mainstream medicine. To the contrary, many practitioners and educational bodies turn a blind eye towards ignorance. A decade later, he published the 10 anniversary edition (this version) in which at the end of each chapter he shares new research and findings in support of his original views.
Beyond Our Genes
The term epigenetics has been around since the 1940s. However, today it has become a field of study with research being labeled accordingly mounting at increasing rates. Epigenetics, which translates to “control above genetics”, lends explanation in regards to how the environment plays a key role in the expression of our genetic code. At one time, it was believed that humans had around 120,000 genes. However, after the conclusion of the human genome project, it was discovered that we have only about 21,000 genes. This massive gap means that something beyond the genes themselves is responsible for passing on traits and expressing the genetic code. Without going too deep, scientists have discovered that within the structure of DNA are additional proteins and resulting modifications to the structure (that do not result in a change in the sequencing of the DNA), that essentially “turn on” or “turn off” parts of the genome. This my friends is where “nature versus nurture” takes place. Yes, the environment of the cell (physical and otherwise) plays a major role in the expression of our genetic code.
Why is the placebo effect so casually dismissed
The placebo effect is fascinating. Further, it is so well known and established that research not accounting for its effects is given little credibility. What is fascinating is that when treatments are tested, they are tested against a placebo group, in an attempt to validate that the treatment has effect beyond the placebo. This must be done, because it is well established that simply believing you are receiving a beneficial treatment (drug or otherwise) can have the intended benefits without actually receiving the treatment.
Now, I say “Why is the placebo effect so casually dismissed”. Yes, the placebo effect is being accounted for in research… so it is recognized. But why is the method by which its effects take place not studied with the same veracity as the treatment it is put up against. The fact is, there is clear evidence to treat virtually any condition with nothing more than “belief”. Sure, one-hundred percent of patients don’t exhibit the placebo effect… and I would argue, one-hundred percent of people are not “believers”. In fact, many people are down right negative and live in a victim state. But what if we could cultivate this “belief” and target it towards our desired outcome? I will tell you this… I don’t believe it is a matter of “what if”, it is a matter of “how”!
