The One Minute Manager

The World's Most Popular Management Method

Ken Blanchard & Spencer Johnson

It’s Story Time

I discovered The One Minute Manager after reading Who Moved My Cheese? while exploring the author's additional works. In fact, there are a number of other books within this series, however this is actually the first of them. Similar to Who Moved My Cheese?, this book is on the shorter side and shares a similar casual tone. I’ve come to appreciate fictional stories like these in which the author(s) wrap practical advice into a fun fictional dialogue. To the contrary, the same message could be delivered in a more formal nature, citing research and personal experiences. Truth be told, I appreciate both approaches, however stories are far easier to remember than lists of principles by themselves.

As Simple As One, Two, Three

As a Coach, I really appreciate the simple three step approach this story paints. Granted, this is about “management”, but even the story itself shares an example of how the same principles can be applied to raising children. As I reflect, I can see the beneficial application of these principles across a diverse set of careers and roles. For example: Teaches, coaches, parents, and of course… managers. The reality is, if you have an expectation that you would like to “manage” then you are a manager!

A few of my favorite quotes from the book!
