Who Moved My Cheese?

An A-Mazing Way to Deal with Change in Your Work and in Your Life

Spencer Johnson

The Great Cheese Metaphor

What is this “Cheese” that somebody moved? In Who Moved My Cheese? Spencer Johnson, M.D. uses cheese as a metaphor for what we really want in life, whether that relates to career, relationship, finance, health & fitness, recognition… whatever we desire and set as our priority.

The story – which reads like a children’s book – highlights the adventures of four tiny characters who wake up one morning to realize that their “Cheese” is all gone. Although it may read like a children’s book – and was eventually published in a fully illustrated version as a children’s book – it delves into profound concepts such as dealing with loss, taking action, overcoming fear, and accepting change.

Added Bonus Materials

I originally read the children’s book version years ago, unaware of the existence of more “mature” copies. That said, when I discovered this version I was delighted with the additional background and insight it provides. In part one of the book, Kenneth Blanchard, Ph.D – co-author of another book by Spencer Johnson, M.D., The One Minute Manager – outlines how the story of Who Moved My Cheese? came to be, providing insight into the author’s intent behind the various metaphors throughout.

In part two of the book, a recap from a reunion in which the members attending discuss the story and how it has impacted their lives, families, and/or businesses. In some cases, they are tales of turn-around, while in others, they are tales of, “if we had only known sooner”.
