Science Turned Secret
Maybe The Strangest Secret by Earl Nightingale wasn’t such a secret, after all, more than 40 years previous Wallace D. Wattles published his work entitled The Science of Getting Rich, in which he lays the foundation for many authors to come. Of course, both authors quote parables from the Bible and other classical works, as such, we can acknowledge that these principles for obtaining wealth have been well understood for some time. Sure, maybe they have remained a secret from the masses, but the “secret” has been there in plain sight all along. Even the 2006 film The Secret, focused on many similar concepts including visualization, mindset, and gratitude.
Clarity of Vision
Although a clear vision is not the only premise of this book, it is certainly a substantial one. As a Life Coach with a heavy focus on clarity, I found much of the discussion on vision to be self-assuring and found a few analogies that I can use while teaching future workshops. For example: “If you were going to send a wireless message to a friend, you would not send the letters of the alphabet in their order, and let him construct the message for himself, nor would you take words at random from the dictionary. You would send a coherent sentence; one which meant something”. In similar fashion, a vision should be clear, allowing for plans to be developed, goals to be set, and actionable steps to be taken.
Bold is an Understatement
I found the book to be a pretty fun read. Although the author claims for this to be a science, he neglects to provide the actual evidence for the science – instead, he states it is a science because any man who acts in this “Certain Way” is bound to get rich. Further, the author goes as far as to tell you not to read any other books on the subject, and means it! He does provide a few references in which the reader can delve into the metaphysical topics underlying his principles, however the author simply says that you must believe his words with the same certainty and faith as you would if someone like Edison were talking to you about electricity. Plain and simple, your faith must be unwavering (according to the author) and conflicting views will only check/halt your progress towards riches. All and all, whether you find some of his claims to be a little wacky, I’m sure you will find that much of what he offers to be quite sound and practical, and more than likely you will be inspired to amp up your gratitude practice and clarify your vision.
A few of my favorite quotes from the book!
