Napoleon Hill

Twenty Plus Years in the Making

I found Think and Grow Rich by Napoleon Hill to be quite inspiring! Not simply from the concepts and path to success outlined within its pages, even more so through the dedication and persistence of the author to bring the book to life. Hill claims that the seed of inspiration was planted by none other than Andrew Carnegie, the great titan of the steel industry. From that early interview, Hill went on to interview over 500 greatly successful individuals spanning the course of over 20 years in developing his Laws of Success and subsequently this popular work. A few notables within that list of interviews are Henry Ford, Thomas Edison, John D. Rockefeller, and Alexander Graham Bell. However, it's not just the big names that are inspiring, it's the clear application of the principles within the book that made both him and the book such a success. For example, Hill had a definite purpose, he knew what he strongly desired, and he was willing to give in exchange that which his desire required. He had faith, he had a plan, and he listened to his inner voice when called upon. His story – and book – reminds me of the quote from Naval Ravikant, “To write a great book, you must first become the book.”

The Challenge to Look Within

Hill doesn’t simply layout principles of success and send his readers on their merry way. Instead he routinely challenges the reader to look within themselves – and when doing so, to “Remember, as you check yourself point by point, that you are both the court and the jury, the prosecuting attorney and the attorney for the defense, and that you are the plaintiff and the defendant, also, that you are on trial.”

Further, he does not just urge the reader to look within, rather he provides numerous self-assessements to facilitate the task. Oh, and if you are wondering about the extent of these assessments, plan for the better part of a day – or longer, if you are truly being “court and jury”. As a Life Coach, quality questions are one of my greatest tools. As such, I will admit I have collected a lot of great questions for aiding in self-discovery and clarity. That said, I discovered a plethora of questions within Hill’s assessments and look forward to integrating them into my practice.

A few of my favorite quotes from the book!

Ninety-eight out of every hundred people working for wages today, are in the positions they hold, because they lacked the definiteness of decision to plan a definite position.
Napoleon Hill : Think and Grow Rich
The starting point of all achievement is desire. (...) Weak desires bring weak results, just as a small amount of fire makes a small amount of heat.
