From Mate to Millionaire

How Watersports, Boat Rentals, and Charters Turned My Passion Into Profits

Kevin O'Neil

Pulling back the curtain

In today’s world, the majority of focus gravitates towards results with little emphasis placed on the process behind obtaining those results. It makes me wonder if the reason people are attracted to a “get rich quick” scheme is because they actually believe in overnight success. Sure, the launch of a product or an IPO may happen overnight, but that discounts the years of effort to get to that point.

What I love about From Mate To Millionaire is that the author isn’t all “sunshine and rainbows”. Kevin O’neil presents an authentic take on the trials and tribulations of being an entrepreneur, especially for those keenly interested in the watersports industry. From family, to finance, to personal health… The sacrifices for what many perceive as “overnight success” are elegantly captured.

Find and replace

Although From Mate to Millionaire is targeted towards those interested in the watersports industry, many of the lessons are universal. I say “find and replace”, because many of the insights and key takeaways can easily be modified to fit your personal niche. That said, I wouldn’t get hung up on the book's target market. In fact, I would encourage any aspiring entrepreneur to give it a read – regardless of their industry. Similar to the book When Breathe Becomes Air, you don’t need to have been diagnosed with stage IV lung cancer and be writing a memoir to your unborn child to benefit from the author’s insight and wisdom. In the end, From Mate to Millionaire effectively captures the essence of human resilience through the story of one man who went from digging ditches in Detroit to owning and operating a multi-million dollar water “adventure” business.

A few of my favorite quotes from the book!
